huaishi is when something bad is around

milan-based, chinese-trouble. that is niyi guo, size of a bean, feisty little thing. originally from the siberian-cold city of harbin, in china, she currently lives in italy, sharing a studio with her man, matthew. back in harbin, the guos are a traditional artsy family, nationally known for their contribution to local tourism and for spreading native old stories through pottery and clay work. they moved to taiwan for a while, and then new york, and that was when niyi's taste for photography really blossomed. despite working with fashion brands and models, she produces and directs a visual project under the name of huaishi, a piece of work that consists in studying chinese youth, old urban and rural tales, teenage-hysteria and the impact of the 90's in current subcultures.

21 yo, photographer. creative, insider. selfmade.

personality-wise, she is friendly, polite and very affectionate, but there is a complete polar side to her. owner of a somehow poor temper, her tongue can be sharper than a knife and she knows how to lose her cool, though she ain't quite fond of it. niyi is deeply in love with eye-catching landscapes, youth, different displays of love and, of course, high fashion; all of those pretty well translated into her art.

WHAT ON EARTH IS HUAISHI?

坏事

chinese for "bad thing". something evil, mischievous, a wrong doing.

"chinese culture, though diverse, is still very traditional. in huaishi, i highlight the remaining or revamped subcultures surviving at the nights of our big cities, such as taipei, hong kong or even harbin, where i come from. those are groups thriving off teenage hysteria, BDSM, tattooing, punk literature, gambling, racing, visual hyperpop and an outstanding sense of fashion. it merges elements of western culture, futurism and japanese schools of imagery"."huaishi's whole point is to simply portray these people's lifestyles. some of these folks are older, some of them younger, but there is this timeless sentiment among all of them. it is an urge for self-expression travelling through generations and it's been a pleasure to document this. i love doing what is ordinary. there is nothing absurd about these pictures; they are simply a document".β€” NIYI GUO FOR VOGUE BRITISH (SEPTEMBER, 2023)
